Teaching as Trespass: Avoiding Places of Innocence

Teachers in Canadian public school contexts are attempting to teach about Indigenous knowledges and epistemologies. Given the present state of asymmetrical Indigenous-settler relations, complexity this work requires a large breadth consideration. Our study provides insight into nuances teaching perspectives worldviews, barriers motivations for its inclusion elementary secondary classrooms. We conceptualize that teachers “always-already” trespassing on Lands illuminate enactment “trespass” by settler as they move their teacher identities place “innocence.” enacted trespass through acts return, absorption, erasure, eliding experiences. offer important starting points continued introspection roles responsibilities working within settler-colonial education structures ensuing complicity historic marginalization Others. highlight possibilities curriculum is treaty-based with collaboration consultation.
